Originally launched on the market in 2005 under the name of Nabaztag, Karotz has been a pioneer in the field of connected and communicating devices.
The very active community around this rabbit has widely contributed to make it so popular.
Today, nearly 10 years after its first appearance, Karotz is facing a very strong technological competition: the connected devices are now 4G, mobile and evolutionary. Karotz and its users have not only helped establish connected devices; they have paved the way. New products make a stronger match to market needs, marking the end of Karotz’s great story.
To keep on offering you innovative and endearing companions, Aldebaran is refocusing on its core business: humanoid robots.
Therefore Karotz’s servers and customer service will be stopped on February, 18th 2015.
To answer all your questions, a QNA is available here.

Edit 02/06/2014: The Karotz server issue described below has been fixed on May, 30th evening (Paris time).
If your Karotz did not connected itself by now (flashing green light), you can force the connection by turning it off and on.
The Karotz website (www.karotz.com) is also back online and fully accessible.
Thank you again for your patience and comprehension.
The Karotz Team
You probably noticed it if you are using Karotz: your smart rabbit cannot connect to the network and you cannot access the Karotz website correctly.
This is due to a server error that affects Karotz’ services and website. It is for now impossible to install or use Karotz, to access to your Karotz account or to download applications. This kind of incident can usually be fixed in a couple of hours, but the current issue is more important and our team is still investigating about the problem. We cannot say exactly when everything will be fixed, but we are doing our best in order to bring back all services online as soon as possible. We will keep you posted regarding this situation.
We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and the delay. Thank you for your patience and your comprehension.

It’s almost Christmas, and here are a few tips to have a wonderful and festive end of year with your smart rabbit :
1) Dress your Karotz like Santa thanks to the finecarrots website (a site with numerous costumes for Nabaztag and Karotz) : just print the costume, use scissors and glue, and have your rabbit ready for Christmas! More details here.
2) Download the Happy Christmas webradio application made by wizz.cc (available in the US and the UK applications stores) to enjoy the fun of Christmas all day and night!
3) Thanks to the Say application, your Karotz can read messages, you can change Karotz’ tone and speed, and you can also program it so when the kids will receive their presents for example, Karotz will say for who is a certain gift, like a real Santa!
On the configuration screen, create a new profile, enter a special message for the person who will receive the gift, then configure a mini-karotz activation with any RFID object (nanoztag, flatnanoz…) that will be placed on or near the present. When the children will discover their Christmas present, they’ll just have to swipe the mini-karotz in front of Karotz’ nose to know for who is the present. It is possible to create 15 different profiles, but do not forget that for an easier activation, you’ll need a mini-karotz for each profile. Thanks to philippeimac from the french forum Nabaztag for this idea !
Happy Christmas from the Karotz Team!
A few days ago, we posted a note on the Support Page of the Karotz website, saying that some weather applications like Weather or Weather Nabaztag were not working, because the Internet service used by those applications have been suddenly closed.
The Weather and Weather Nabaztag Applications are now functional again. The service has changed, and Karotz Team adds for the Weather Application the temperature of the moment, as a bonus with max. and min. temperatures of the day. As always, Karotz’ light will react according to the weather announced:
- sunny = yellow light
- cloudy = blue and white alternative light
- rain = flashing blue light
- thunder / storm = short flashes of white light
- fog = grey light
- snow = flashing white light
In order to have the latest and functional version of those applications, you need:
- to delete and download again your favourite weather application,
- or simply go the set up screen of your applications, and click on the “save” button in order to update the applications.
And do not forget about the other Weather applications, like “Weather Information”, available in the US Application Store (http://www.karotz.com/appz/app?id=820) !
Before the weekend, have a look to the newest Karotz appz published in our applications stores:
Enjoy the movies application made by Douglas Henke, available in the US applications store. Karotz will get current showtimes from the theater of your choice (in USA or Canada only) for today, tomorrow or the days after that, and read the movie titles and optionally, the starting times! No more excuse if you miss the beginning of the movie!
And with the automationNEXT appz available in the german application store, you can control your Karotz with next.system Building-Automation-System from automationNEXT.
To use this appz, you will need a next.system, a system used for building automation. The appz works like a gateway. When you have installed it on your Karotz and added a Karotz – Node to the next.system, you will be able to control Karotz from the building automation system. As an example, you can use Karotz for messaging like “The living room window is still open” or to welcome guests at home with a “Welcome to our home”. You can connect the light from Karotz to a CO2 air quality sensor. It’s also possible to send a message to Karotz when you open the door with a fingerprint reader. These are some examples of what can be done with the appz.
Have fun, and stay tuned for new appz!
It is still summer vacations, and here is a perfect game for the whole family using your Karotz- “Who is it”.
You certainly know the board game “Guess who?”, where you have to guess the character your opponent have chosen, before he guess yours. Both players ask the other person some “yes” or “no” questions (“is he wearing a hat?” “Does he have a beard?”…). And with those questions, the aim is to narrow down (using the character cards provided) who might be their mystery character.
Thanks to the Karotz application “Who is it” you can download on the Karotz applications store (US and UK), you and your kids would be able to play with (or against, as you wish) your Karotz! The game is easy and fun for ages six and older.
To play in good conditions this game, it is recommended to first prepare a board game with the cards representing all the possible characters. All you need is available here. Karotz, as a smart rabbit, has everything in his head!
After chosen the level of difficulty in the application setting page, you only have to launch the application and lets the game begin!
The game is played in three rounds. At the beginning of a round, the player chooses a character card. The player and Karotz will successively ask a question to guess the mystery character chosen by the opponent.
When it’s his turn to play, the player ask a single question to Karotz, but do not a large sentence, but a keyword (when Karotz’s light is orange) like “, “Boy,” “Girl,” “Hair,” “Bald”, “Mustache”, “Beardless”, “Glasses” “Hat,” “Mouth,” “Red Ears,” “Red,” “White Ears,” “White” (the available keywords are listed on the board game provided with the application).
Karotz will then tell you if yes or no its mystery character matches the keyword or has the characteristics proposed. When it’s turn, karotz will ask a question, and the player must then answer it by “yes” or “no” (the characteristics of each character are indicated on each card).
Each turn is controlled by a quick press on Karotz’s button, to let time to the player to find the answer, using his board cards.
As soon as the player has the right answer (or thinks he has it), he will be able when it is his turn to say the keyword “SUGGEST” and propose your solution. But be careful! Karotz will also make its best to find your mystery character first! Who will win the game?
Have fun !
UK and US applications stores already have their Facebook and Twitter+ appz. They are now also available in the German applications store!
With those applications, you can let Karotz informs you when you have new messages posted by your contacts on your Facebook and / or Twitter account, and ask your companion to publish texts, audio messages and even pictures!
First, you have to allow your Karotz to to be connected to your Facebook and / or Twitter accounts:
Once you have download Facebook or Twitter + appz, click on the button “Connect this application to your Facebook/Twitter account” (“Anwendung mit Ihrem Facebook/Twitter-Konto verbinden”) in the application configuration page, to open the “Social Networks”(“Meine sozialen Netz”) page, then click on the Facebook or Twitter button and follow the instructions.
In order to publish audio files on your accounts, you also have to give Soundcloud the authorization to connect to your network accounts:
On the “Social Networks” page, click on SoundCloud button, then sign up with your Facebook account (if you’ve already have a SoundCloud account, simply enter the email and password of your account).
How to use those applications?
On the configuration page of the application, you can choose:
- the information you want Karotz to read: messages, notifications, posts on Facebook, or private messages, mentions and new tweets on your Twitter feed
- to hear the oldest or the newest news first
- to mark all messages as read when you exit the application, or not
- the type of activation
Depending on the way to activate it, those appz work differently:
With voice command or manual activation, Karotz welcomes you with a first message. Press on Karotz button and when its light becomes orange, say a voice command to listen to your messages, record your text or audio message and post it, or to take a picture and publish it. You can also access the main features directly with specific voice commands. Check the “help” corner on your application’s configuration screen to know more about those voice commands)
With a periodical or scheduled activation, Karotz warns you directly if new information have been published on your Facebook or Twitter account. Press one time on Karotz button to listen to them.
When Karotz is reading a message, press once on its button to skip it.
For our german users that just want the simplicity of Twitter, reading mentions, feed, and direct messages, the simple Twitter appz, now called Mini-Twitter, can be downloaded from the German applications store right here.
Ready to discover (again) social networks with Karotz? Here you go!
Our team has fixed the issue encountered with our servers yesterday, which prevented your Karotz to connect to your network.
The issue was caused by a bug affecting some specific versions of linux. This bug was linked to the existence of a “leap second” this year, and it slowed down the Java processes of our servers to a crawl. Finding out about this bug took a while, but once our systems were updated, out servers restarted normally and your Karotz turned back to green!
Once again, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused, and thank you again for your patience and understanding. See you soon for other newz!
As you probably noticed, we are encountering issues with our servers today. This explains why your Karotz cannot connect to your network and is flashing red (the light may also stay solid green when you turn on your Karotz).
All the Karotz team is working on this issue, and we want you to be sure that we are doing our best to fix it as soon as possible.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
[Update: the problem is now fixed. More details in this new post.]
Hello to all Karotz’ lovers!
The At Home appz evolves! Thanks to this appz, ask Karotz to send a short message and / or a picture to any email address of your choice, for example to tell you when your kids are back home after school, training or a day at the beach!
Now, you can send a message and / or a picture to multiple recipients!
How? Just add all the email addresses you want, separate with semicolon (“;”) in the “E-mail(s)” box when you access the At Home configuration screen (example: firstname.lastname@example.org;email@example.com). You can do that for any profile you create.
Children will be able to send a mail telling they are at home, not only to their mother, but also their father, or grandparents…
No more tears if more than one person want to receive the pictures taken periodically by Karotz watching your home!
And now, it will be really easy to send short and cool messages with a nice pic take by Karotz to all your friends and relatives!
